The road trial is an instinct test of the Dalmatian's natural ability to coach. It is common knowledge that the British used Dalmatians to run with the horse and carriage to protect it from other animals and people. Since fire engines were drawn by horses, the Dalmatian served a similar purpose for fire horses, sometimes even running in front of the horses to clear the way to the fire. It is only natural that the same uses were made of Dalmatians here in America. This instinct to coach is still evident in the breed even though it has been many years since we stopped using carriages. Nowadays, breeders are proud of this instinct and take advantage of road trials to showcase their dog's ability. At a road trial, the Dalmatian must perform prescribed exercises with a horse and rider. Examples include Stay, Come, Hock, Speed and Distraction. All of these must be done off lead, of course. Then the endurance portion begins. The dog must run 12.5 miles in three hours or 25 miles in six hours. There are Vet checks for horse and dog at the beginning, mid point and end. Those who qualify are awarded the Road Dog or Road Dog Excellent degree. We have put RD titles on several of our dogs:
